When people would go shopping for a new set of bar stools in the early 1900s, they didn't have very many choices. The material was most always wood; the specific type depended on whatever particular shipment had come in last and how quickly you needed them. They would be hand built and hand finished and everyone had a unique set because no two sets were ever made from the exact same tree or in the exact same style. Today, your options are very different. We no longer walk across town to the local craftsman and place an order for new furniture. Instead, we drive from furniture to furniture store trying to decide on one out of hundreds of options and looking for the best deal we can find. You can find everything from bamboo to wrought iron counter stools so it is best to have an idea of the different materials available before you enter the crazy world of furniture stores!

Finished wood is still a very popular material for dining room chairs. Wood used for furniture usually falls under the category of hard wood, such as oak, birch, mahogany, and walnut. Most people who purchase wood chairs purchase ones with an upholstered seat or cushion because sitting on hard wood for more than an hour can become uncomfortable.  Wood stools can be extremely basic, with just a seat and for legs, or they can be more elaborate with fancy back designs, armrests, and beautiful finishes. They can be fun swivel stools or sophisticated pieces that add an element of art to the kitchen or dining room.

Wrought iron counter stools are another option. This material is a commercially pure iron and is a popular furniture material. Not only is it very tough and durable, it is also malleable and ductile, allowing artisans to weld it into ornamental ironwork. Wrought iron, also known as worked iron, is also popular because it is highly resistant to corrosion and keeps a finish very well.

Plastic, other types of metal such as aluminum and even bamboo all are used for kitchen barstools. In order to find the one that works best for you, you need to start shopping!
