A Look at Bergen County: a Thriving 21st Century Community

Part of the New York City metropolitan area, Bergen County, NJ, is the largest county in all of the State of New Jersey. A good number of the residences of Bergen County commute into Manhattan and other New York boroughs to work; many residents of the overall metropolitan area flock to Bergen County New Jersey to shop. (Bergen County has garnered the reputation as being one of the most favored retail shopping areas in the entire NYC metropolitan area, perhaps second only to Manhattan itself.)

Economically, Bergen County, NJ, is a national leader. Bergen County ranks in the top 25 high income counties in all of the United States. As mentioned previously retail shopping is a major enterprise in Bergen County. Evidence of this reality is found in over a dozen major shopping centers and scores of independently run retail stores of all types located throughout the county. One rather unusual note about commerce in 21st century Bergen County: The country remains one of the only communities left in the United States that enforces nearly universal Blue Laws on Sunday. Despite being a major retail center in the NYC metro-plex, only grocery stores are permitted to be in operation and open on Sundays. Despite efforts to do away with these Blue Laws, prior attempts to do so have failed.

Sports, athletics and recreation is also a major pastime in Bergen County. For example, Bergen County actually is the home of the New York Giants. Moreover, the county has a significant number of acres dedicated to recreational activities and pursuits of all types. There are more than a dozen county owned recreational sites in Bergen County.

Bergen County New Jersey is also home to a considerable number of points of historic interest. Settled and organized in 1683, some of these historical sites date back four hundred years and beyond. The area was occupied by Native Americans prior to arrival of European settlers in the 17th century. Because of its rich history, the area remains a very popular tourist destination.

Bergen County generally has a comfortable climate. Technically speaking Bergen County, NJ, is classified as having a humid subtropical climate. The area gets very little persistent snow in the wintertime unlike surrounding areas. While the summer months are humid, the overall temperature generally remains fairly moderate leaving Bergen County pleasant during that time of the year.
