PSP puts more Emphasis on Downloads

The gaming giants Sony have confirmed that downloadable games will become a much bigger feature on the PSP in 2009 than they have been up to now. Sony Computer Entertainment have said that one of the things they’d like to push this year is the content that’s available on the PSP and to make sure that this is the right kind of content and the right kind of games that are available for download on the Playstation Network (PSN) for PSP users. The company said that PSP gamers would start to notice an increase in the amount of content that was available for the PSP on the network towards the end of the year. There will be some gamers who interpret these comments made by Sony to mean that they have now come up with a timeline by which they want to have the UMD optical disc format phased out. However, this is just one way that this could be interpreted, as no official word has been released yet stating when or if Sony will be getting rid of their UMD format. There have however been rumors that a new PSP is being designed that will no longer have the ability to play UMDs that may be making its debut later on this year. Sony seem to have a difficult decision to reach regarding the PSP, as retail sales, namely on UMDs are still of extreme significance but they also want to look into launching digital versions of the games that have been released on UMD.
